BLOG TOUR – Remy by Katy Evans

Remy

REMY is the retelling of REAL and MINE from Remington “Riptide” Tate’s point of view. Anyone who has read the bestsellers knows the story of Remy and Brooke. One of the most frustrating parts of reading the previous novels was the absence of any first-person accounts from Remy. He’s an enigma, for sure. Why was everyone so willing to help this man?  Why would anyone stay?  I still couldn’t get past these questions with the first two books.

The fantastic journey retold from Remy’s perspective lends a lot of weight to the overall story. The plot is so much thicker, of course, and there are many scenes we weren’t privy to in the previous novels. Companion novels can be hard to love. Sometimes they’re overwrought retellings. I’m pleased to say that I wasn’t ever bored despite knowing where things were headed. I was baffled from time to time, as Remy’s thoughts are hardly reasonable. Some of them are downright, well, crazy. There are a couple of chapters where you are in his mind when he’s “speedy” and it’s incredibly telling. His post-Brooke low at the end of REAL is told at length from Remy’s perspective and the plot ties all finally begin to strengthen. So much of the early chapters of MINE is Brooke speculating wildly while Remy acts like an ass. Since he doesn’t talk much, the reader has long been left to assume that there wasn’t much to him other than overt alpha maleness. Filling in the pieces helped me like everyone a lot more than I did before. Likeability is never a reason for me to stop reading a novel, of course. It feels good, though, truth be told.

The hot sex that moves all of these tales forward is, quite frankly, MUCH hotter from Remy’s perspective. (Pause for applause, fellow smut lovers.)

I never could really understand what Team Remy and Brooke saw in Remy that they would be willing to put up with his often-criminal behavior. We were TOLD he was worth it before. We were left to assume these characters really KNEW him and just to trust. Now we KNOW  him and can empathize with his journey. After knowing his thoughts and fears and feelings, especially his history with his parents and the institutions, it made me question all of it a lot less.
